The term "pig butchering" originates from the scam's method, where the victim is metaphorically "fattened up" over time before being "butchered," i.e., financially drained.
In these scams, the fraudster typically initiates contact with the victim via social media platforms, dating apps, or messaging services, posing as a friendly or romantic interest. Initially, the conversation might seem innocent, building trust and rapport. Once a relationship is established, the scammer introduces the victim to what appears to be a lucrative investment opportunity, often involving cryptocurrency, foreign exchange (forex) trading, or other high-risk markets. The scammer provides fake data, showing consistent returns, and persuades the victim to invest.
At first, the victim may even see small returns, encouraging further investment. Over time, the scammer asks for larger amounts of money, convincing the victim that they are on the verge of substantial financial gains. However, once the victim has invested significant funds, the scammer disappears, leaving the victim with no means to recover their money.
These scams are particularly dangerous because they involve long-term psychological manipulation. Victims are often left financially ruined and emotionally devastated, as the relationships they believed to be genuine were entirely fabricated for exploitation.
